My Personal Journey with Music Appreciation

How Music Appreciation Changed My Life—and Why I Teach It Today

My passion for early childhood music education stems from personal experience. Growing up in a neglectful household, I didn’t have access to music lessons. My parents didn’t prioritize early childhood development, and the only activities I participated in were those provided by my boarding school.

One of those activities was music appreciation. My music teacher would sing songs, and we would follow along in a songbook. At this religious school in England, singing was a normal part of life—in chapel, in class, and at school events. Those early experiences left a lasting impression on me.

A Journey from Music Appreciation to Teaching

Although I wanted to play the piano as a child, I never had the opportunity. At 18, I decided to take up music on my own. I chose the guitar because it was portable and practical, but my motivation came from a desire to play the songs I grew up with. This led me to explore music theory, performance, and eventually, music education.

I studied music at Santa Barbara City College and UC Santa Cruz, where I discovered my passion for teaching music to young learners. Those early experiences with music appreciation planted a seed that grew into a lifelong journey of learning and sharing music.

Why I Teach Music to Preschoolers Today

Today, as a Seattle-based music educator, I’m committed to giving children the opportunities I didn’t have—starting with the joy of music appreciation for preschoolers. My goal is to inspire young learners and help them build a lifelong love for music.
